Failed Smog
My son's new-to-him '88 Cherokee failed smog. Not the emissions, the visual inspection. I was wondering if anyone had a picture of a California smogged '88 or there-abouts that I could match up?

Easy way to take care of that..................MOVE!
Surely someone in this OEM forum should have something. I left my 99 pretty well stock under the hood but not for that reason, sorry I can't help you.
If the Stupidly of the person in the Whitehouse's idea of the "Cash for Clunkers" there would be a lot more nice older jeeps other 4x4's and great care for us to get parts from.
But they were in bed with the Unions and car makers to sell new cars and that they did plus drive up the price of old ones. If that hadn't happened you could have went to the many great JY in CA. and found every thing you need, just from looking at 1 or 2.
I hope your son finds what he needs for his, always a good source in looking online for what you need photos I bet there are some.

I have spent the last week looking for a CCV Valve. I called a Jeep/Chrysler dealer, and they had no idea what I was talking about. I hit four different auto parts shops, and it wasn't until we got to the NAPA that someone really helped us. He said, and I quote, "I've been behind this parts counter for thirty-two years, and I have never heard of a CCV Valve. However, I know this guy named John, and he speaks fluent Jeep." Though John knew what we were talking about, he has spent the last week looking for one. He contends there are no new ones on the West Coast, and that it might take another week to find a used one. I went to a junk yard, and there were rows of Cherokees. Those that had an inline 6 4liter, every single one of them had had their CCV Valve broken off. We finally found one that had its CCV Valve intact. I rushed back to the counter to talk business, and THEY WOULDN'T SELL IT TO ME! They said they wanted to sell the engine as a whole. A junk yard that won't part out a car. So if anyone knows where I might purchase to elusive CCV Vale, I would greatly appreciate the help. John gave a litany of auto parts companies that no longer manufacture the item, and yet what does the 2014 In-line Six have instead?

The CCV valve on the 88 should be just like my 90, it is a full open 90 degree elbow. The help section at the local parts store will have what you need, and the rubber grommet for fitment.

High Mileage, did you not read my post? I called a Jeep dealership and they did not recognize the term CCV Valve. Google CCV Valve. Go to J.C.Whitney or Rock Auto. I have three Cherokees, a '95 and '94 and this '88. The two Chryslers both have CCV Valves, how this '88 doesn't have one is beyond me, but it doesn't. If you know of a store or a junkyard or an on-line source, feel free to humble me with the link

They may have also changed the design from year to year, so it may not be the same ones as on your other jeeps. The one on rock auto looks like the one in your pic. Let me ask this: when you failed your visual, did they tell you WHY you failed your visual? You may need to find a different shop, or take it to a referee....

The large hose with the grommet attached is what you are looking for, www.rockauto.com. Not trying to seem rude and yes I read your post, the simple fix if you can't find it is as in my previous post. rockauto also has the whole vac harness available it is a two piece. The dealer last I checked wants 80ish for the harness and most other parts stores show it as not available if at all.
A PCV valve goes from the valve cover to the air filter housing, before the Throttle Body, and is about a quater inch hose. A CCV valve goes from the valve cover to the intake manifold, after the Throttle Body, and is about an eighth-or-smaller inch hose. After the Son came back from the inspection and tried to explain the visual fail, I took the vehicle back to the shop, and the guy explained it to me. Someone had installed a PCV valve. This is apparently a crime against God and Nature. He told me if I hollowed it out, took out the valve inside the housing, that would be acceptable. There is no CCV valve on the rear, though, just a thick rubber grommet with a tube sticking into it. The item in HighMileage's pic is the hose that I should get to properly replace what was the PCV hook up. I'm risking fifteen bucks on something being sold as a Jeep Crankcase Vent on E-Bay that looks vaguely right. Thanks for the in-put.
