exhausts?
And prices for cats have dropped drastically. I scrap metal all the time for extra cash, last time the yards were only giving $35, but I spose different areas will have different prices.
Sound will chance, you won't notice any performance difference.

I have an old glasspack from the 70s in mine, and it sounds great, oddly enough when I cut the muffler off I looked down the pipe and guess what, the cat was just a shell, really weird, like it was a dummy cat with nothing ever inside

Cats don't last forever, at least older ones don't. Eventually the guts will disintegrate and get pushed out the back, which is one possibility for the empty cat you've got. It could also have been gutted by a previous owner, which is really easy to do, but again, illegal. All you gotta do is jam something like a metal bar through the cat and knock out all the innards. I've also seen people cut them in half and hack out all the guts, too.
Unless you are OBD-II, chances are if your rear o2 sensor is plugged in it won't toss a CEL, even if you've got no cat or a gutted one.
But again, I don't know why this is being discussed as its not a legal mod to any road going vehicle. If you've got a rig thats NOT licenced/plated/insured/etc, then you are OK. But if it sees ANY road time, its bad news.

I just put a FlowMaster Super 50 SUV on mine. At idle, it has a nice deep/throaty sound. At low RPM, it has a nice throaty/growl sound (turns heads). At full throttle, it has a very pleasing performance sound.
No interior droning at all, I close the windows and forget it's there. I was expecting it to be just a tad louder, but overall I am pleased with it.

What year is your truck? I'm willing to bet its PRE-OBDII.

it doesnt look gutted, its clean, like if someone cut it open, cleaned it out and welded it back together, there are no remnants inside and the inside is clean and silver, very weird

L6 doesnt have enough pressure to make a 40/44 sound good. Everyone who thinks it does needs some 101 education. It sounds raspy and ****ty.

just the muffler added...i agree
upgrade the cat to a high flow and 2.5" tubing - sounds much better IMO - nice and deep - rastyness went away with mandrel bent tailpipe (Super 40)
