Default exhaust question

My muffler and tailpipe basically rusted off about a week ago, so im driving with just a cat. and then the exhaust is just dumped. its too loud as my DD so im thinking ill just buy a flowmaster 40 (seems to be the best sounding muffler for the xj's) stick it on after the cat. and then maybe put a turn down right after that so it ends at the rear axle. Is that legal? (in MA) and im thinking a turn down bcz i dont feel like ordering a tail pipe right now. TIA and if you have any better ideas please tell.

Go to Summit, it was just posted, I tried to find it. They have a $75 rebate from Dynomax right now on exhaust and tail pipe.

X2. by far the best deal out there for a tight budget repair.

That is a great deal but for my xj its gonna cost 140ish- $75 rebate so around $65 not including shipping. thats a great price but i just want to know how it sounds. i listened to some youtube vids (all of which have terrible sound quality) and they all sounded quiet compared to the flowmasters on most xj's. i guess ill just have to suck it up and take the great deal!?

even flowmaster 40 with "high flow" cat (if you know what i mean), sounds quiet. it'll get deeper as it gets some miles on it.

I used a thrush turbo and took out the secondary cat on my 01. sounds pretty good, but will be investing in the new flowmaster hushpower muffler for a long term solution.

In most states the exhaust must dumb after the passenger compartment. With the cherokee, that means the stock location, behind the hatch.
