Default The Eternal Check Engine Light

I hope someone can help me. I have a check engine light problem. Have had it worked on at a dealer with about a minimum of 16 visits over a 3 month period. Had numerous replacement parts, all unsuccessful and costly. Oxygen sensors twice, catalytic converter, main computer system, ground wires, distributor and rotor. The last suggestion was to replace the whole wiring harness at which I stopped going to the dealer. When the computer is reset, the jeep sputters loses power and pops. Once it finally pops and the check engine light comes on the car runs fine with no problems and did so for about 6 months. It again self corrected and the check engine light went out but as that happened it sputtered and lost power and popped and the light came back on. Now it runs fine with no problems but the light remains on. My main concern is that the loss of power and popping could happen at any time and this could pose a driving risk.

Would anyone one have any suggestions on this? On the engine analysis it continues to show it as oxygen sensor problems.

Sixteen visits for the same issue, many $$$ in parts, and it's still not fixed? And this is a Jeep dealer? Wow.

What year is the Jeep, and what are the exact codes?

Well those are a lot of visits, and a lot of money...

I have the same problem (check engine light on) haven't fixed it yet however I went to my friend's auto shop which is specialized in jeeps and he told me that the code on the diagnostic computer says there's a leak on the canister and that even when it is not a critical issue (for the car's performance/safety that is) fixing it requires a lot of work since they have to check for leaks on a lot of areas...

So my first advice would be to get it to another shop/garage and ask them to give you the code that the diagnostic computer throws and then you can post it here and I'm pretty sure someone more experienced on the subject may guide you on the issue itself. Sometimes the fix is quite simple but there's mechanics who take advantage of our lack of knowledge to charge a lot.

Good luck!

Give us you jeep info like year, etc...
Go to a local auto store, have them pull the codes and print them out. Report back

Yes, we absolutely, positively need the EXACT CODES in order to help you. Along with year/engine.

Anything less is absolutely, positively pure guesswork.

Thanks you all for all your responses.

As I am away visiting right now, I will not be able to get the exact codes that come up for the check engine light. What I can tell you though is my vehicle is a 1997 jeep cherokee sport 4 door 4 wheel drive with a 4.0 engine. The codes from the dealer that always came up showed the problem to be the Oxygen sensors causing the light to come on.

02 sensors? Did they replace all sensors and is there any crack in your exhaust at all?

$80 bucks or less buys you a code reader. Going to an Advance Auto, or Autozone and they will read for free.

o2 sensors were both replaced twice with the catalytic converter. No crack in the exhaust system.

Cracked exhaust manifolds are common on these, and it could cetainly cause an O2 sensor code. I would check very carefully.

did they check the wiring to the 02 sensors?
the codes can indicate a problem with the sensor or the circuit itself
