There will be motor swap experts posting shortly I'm sure. I didn't think a '97 up head was drilled/tapped for the '96 down temp gauge sending unit. Was your temp gauge hooked up?

I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I think anything from 87 all the way up until they went to coil packs sometime in 99 can go OK. You will want the sensors and stuff that match your 91 PCM....and the torque-plate as well, for sure on a 90 or earlier, no idea there on the later. I suppose Cruisers Ho > Renix swap info found in my signature might apply in reverse putting a < 91 in an OBDI HO.
Like DJB says, your original temp sender was on the rear of the head, then moved to the t-stat housing later.

The temp gauge does work. Not 100% sure the engine is a 97 the previous owner told me that's what it is. Not sure how to tell its year. This maybe a issue lol. Is there a way to tell what year the engine is?

In the interest of being complete, sharing information, the block casting number is located on the LEFT side, forward of the motor mount.
Be sure it is not a late 99 with coil packs. Again I'm no expert, but you likely will want to keep your sensors matched to your year/PCM.
