Default Engine swap option

Hey so there probably is a thread for this, but I can't seem to find it.
So I have a 99 cherokee and I am going to be dropping a newer engine in it. Ive seen that some mount things are different on years and what not.
I found a 97 and an 04 wrangler engine, just wondering if one of those would work.
Also wondering what ones are drop in fits?
If anyone could help that would be great.

I believe the 97 may work. The only 100% complete drop in, this includes accessories, sensors, wire locations, is XJ 97 to 99, and 2000 without CAFE emissions.

All XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

Also, take into consideration that your exhaust manifold wont work on 0331 heads which are in everything 2000 and newer (and some 99 vehicles; WJ).

So I should be good with going for that 97 block? Will most of my stuff line up? or is there some major parts I will have to find/make?

Are there any other major things I should be aware of?

I would say yes, but I cannot answer for the accessories.

Youd likely have to trade between the engines.

Again, the only 100% unbolt and bolt in is 97 to 99 XJ and some 2000's without the CAFE emissions.
