Default Engine Swap (99 to 01?)

I have a 1999 xj 4.0 and there is a really bad knocking. First I was wondering what could be possible things making this noise. Then after that is figured out I want to way my options to fix the problem or buy a rear ended 2001 for $1000 that only has 117k miles on it and swap the engines (if it will work?).

My personal opinion, 117K is kind of high mlge.... You can probably rebuild your motor for just about same price I would think... Just saying if your gonna go through the trouble why not start with a freshly rebuilt motor with no milage..

Just my opinion..

Im sure it can be done, Im guessing its a 4.0 you have and the 2001 has a 4.0. Should be a fairly easy swap. And 117,000 is nothing, my family has 4 Jeeps with the 4.0. My Jeep has the lowest mileage at 168,000. The most we had was 245,000 and the transmission got weird but it was still very drive able. Just make sure the engine/jeep you will be getting still starts and what not. My first Jeep had 206,000 and I didnt even hesitate with the mileage, these engines easily outlast the body.

Im sure someone has put a 2001 engine into something older, however from what I understand the late 1999 on up has some issue with a cracking head, youd have to do some research and find out if its worth the risk. And 1000$ for a wrecked Jeep is fairly high. My 1999 with only 160,000 and a 3.5 inch lift at the time was $1200.

$1900 for a wrecked jeep. They may be a bit crazy. I might give 750$ if it's driveable. Thankfully an xj is fairly cheap. Just don't be in a rush. Lots of knocking engines (in my experience) never have major issues. My friends Grand Prix had a knock from about 80,000 he's at 145000 with it.

You can pick up a fair looking, good running XJ for a whole lot less. $1900 is way to high for that much damage.

Well, before you start talking $1000's, why not try a free potential solution first?

Extremely, easy too do. Hardest part might be getting bolts off the cover.
