I was trying to do some quick research, but was wondering if anyone recommends a good cleaner to put through after I drain the old oil, and before I change it. I bought my XJ recently, and checked the oil filter, and the date on the filter says 2010.. so I'm assuming that's roughly how old the oil is.
Thanks guys

Filters can sit on the shelf/warehouse for months. Let's say that was a december filter that sat till march that puts you right on for an oil change. If you are that worried get some high mile oil and run it through. There should be more than enough crap in that to clean it out.

some people on here done trans fluid for a few hundred miles before changing, some use seafoam for 100 miles i guess. i managed to find some motor flush to put in for 5 or 10 minutes, maybe 15, then change. others probably will post here soon.

High quality full synthetic oils clean your engine. A friend of mine runs straight diesel in the crankcase whenever he first gets a used car and then flushes with cheap dino oil twice within 1000 miles after the diesel wash. I don't personally recommend this, nor do I recommend any "engine flushing magic fluid" other than the high quality full syn oils.

Ah OK, so engine flushing fluid is more of a gimmick? I'll be fine with a high quality full synthetic type then? And if the oil filter is still relatively new, I'll still change it, just to be safe, since it's a used vehicle and I don't know how the previous owner treated it.
Thanks!

Unless you have some "evidence" of sludge buildup in the engine (remove valve cover and take a look if you're really curious), there is no need for an engine flush.
Use a good quality oil (conventional or synthetic) of the proper viscosity for the environment, change it at a reasonable interval, and use a good quality oil filter.
Nothing more needed.

Personally, I go with one of three brands: Pennzoil Ultra, Valvoline MaxLife, or Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is considered the best of those three, and it's $25 for 5 quarts at Wally World. I use Wix filters, but grab a Purolator if you can. I don't use fram anymore, I've heard nasty things about them. I've heard that K&N makes a good oil filter, but it's twice the price of the Wix at $12-$13. My $.02...

So I ended up getting some Mobil 1 10W-30 and a Mobil 1 filter. Also ran some Motor Flush through beforehand, and quite a bit of gunk came out (go figure, lol). Also put in a new starter. Mine 'died' Friday night when I was out in the burbs with some friends. Happened right in the parking lot. Got towed to a buddy's house, went back Sunday and the damn thing started right up. Well I put a Duralast in (hopefully it's reliable, if not, it's under warranty).
Was a good night though!
