engine noise when i accelerate but its not all the time

engine noise when i accelerate but its not all the time
I have an engine noise when I accelerate it sounds like rocks hitting the side of a coffee can I know for sure its not an engine knock I have thought it could be the flexplate is there anything else I should check besides the bearings in the water pump. Help appreciated
