You're right, it is a free country cuz you came in here like an arrogant ***** trying to flame me because I used the terminology you didn't like. Well you can go **** yourself with your **** poor attitude. I know my jeep and I know how well it runs. So take your **** talk to facebook where people might actually give a **** about your crappy attitude.

I didn't flame you, I corrected you. You are using a bogus method for tracking your mileage, which will not give you accurate information. It is your mistake to continue to use that method.
Speaking of attitudes, you won't learn much with yours.

I'm thinking that Mark is thinking that the odometer is a better and more consistent factor in measuring MPGs than the known inaccurate and often fickle fuel sender/low fuel warning light for accurately calculating fuel mileage.
If that indeed is his train of thought, I share it.

Isn't everyone saying the same thing here? He put in 15 gallons of gas and drove 280 miles. Divide the 2 and you get miles per gallon. How else are you supposed to get your MPG?

It depends on how he thinks he knows it's 15 gallons. If he's going by the gas gauge, he really has no idea what he's putting in. Those gauges are not anywhere close to accurate. He's mentioned "miles per tank" and he's mentioned his "low fuel indicator".
Neither of those can be relied on to determine the number of gallons that are used. Not even close.
He hasn't said anything about reading the gas pump. Unless you have a modern car that has on-board electronics that measure fuel used, the pump is the only thing you should be looking at.
So, for us Jeep folks, the gas pump is the only thing we should be looking at.
Then there's the question of an accurate odometer. With oversized tires, that has to be taken into account, of course.

Ok, when I fill up within a couple miles of my gas light coming in I can typically get 15 gallons in the tank without topping off. The tank holds 20 gallons. So, if I'm driving 280 miles on 15 gallons of gas (280/15=18.66666667) now that's my combined mileage. I get around 20mpg on the highway and about 15mpg on the street.
YOUR gauges and warnings might not be accurate but mine are.

Your gas gauge is not an accurate measure of fuel used. Neither is your warning light.

Askingxforxit...
When I read your post, I understood that your method to mean:
1. Run the tank til the light comes on.
2. Fill the tank til the pump shuts off automatically. this usually requires about 15 gal. ("Topping off" meaning running in gas til it leaks out at the nozzle. It's more accurate, but a little messy.)
3. Note the gallons from the fill-up at the pump.
4. Note the trip odometer, then reset.
4. Do the math.
I think BlueRidge is bent by your assumtion that low fuel light = 15 gal used. Might be true for your car but not a general rule.

This is the correct method. This is miles per gallon.
The rest of it is crap.
The low fuel light and the "miles per tank" have nothing to do with it.
The only thing that can be relied on is the gallons pumped. It does not matter even a tiny little bit if the low fuel light comes on or not, or if you fill up at a half tank, or a quarter tank, or any point in between, or how many gallons it takes to fill up when the low fuel light comes on.
All of that is just a bunch of meaningless noise, at best.
How many threads on here are there about bad fuel economy?
A lot.
And in how many of them is it clear that many of the posters have NO CLUE about what their actual mileage is because they are using some bogus "miles per tank" method?
Almost all of them.

My calculation for determining my gas mileage is still correct. Who cares if I said "per tank" or using my low fuel light to know when it's time to add gas. Btw, u also use my Garmin to help, I'm sure it's not 100% accurate but it's close enough for me. This photo was taken taken minutes ago.
