There's the spec card,I don't know what's reasonable for used cams, I'll put micrometers on it and make sure it's not out of spec,I had a chassis dyno pull at 200 ft/lbs at 1500 rpm but that was among other mods. Stock intake, exhaust, but had a mega squirt and 28 lb/hr injectors.

Have you checked your throttle cable for slack?
What kind of gas mileage do you get with that set up? Is your XJ stock height?

I'm averaging about 280+ per tank. Sitting on 235/75 with a 3" lift and 220k miles on the clock

Um...try your math again. And I also never run the tank empty, I'm actually getting 280ish(+/- 10) when the gas light comes on.

Ok, when I fill up within a couple miles of my gas light coming in I can typically get 15 gallons in the tank without topping off. The tank holds 20 gallons. So, if I'm driving 280 miles on 15 gallons of gas (280/15=18.66666667) now that's my combined mileage. I get around 20mpg on the highway and about 15mpg on the street.

Using the "miles per tank" method means you have no idea what your actual mileage is, you just think you do.

You are relying on a very inaccurate fuel gauge and the variability of the gas pump shut off switch to tell you how much fuel you are using. this means you have an unknown variable times an unknown variable.

It's completely bogus.

The only correct method for tracking fuel economy is to record the actual miles traveled and the actual gallons pumped, and do the math.

Otherwise, you are lying to yourself.

No, it isn't, unless you misspoke. "Miles per tank" is NOT miles per gallon.

If you record the actual fuel pumped, and the actual miles driven, you don't have any reason to pay any attention to "per tank".

You can pull in to that really expensive station, put 5 gallons in to get you to the cheaper station you usually use, and still have an accurate record of your fuel mileage.

"Per tank" isn't "per gallon". It's a stinking liar, sneering and laughing at you every time you utter those words.

If you have an Android phone, check out aCar. It's a GREAT app for tracking mileage, maintenance, and everything else you need to to know about your car.

Maybe "per tank" isn't the best but my calculation is correct.

The "calculation" is correct. The info you're plugging into the equation is not real accurate though, especially relying on the low-fuel light.

If I'm constantly putting in 15 gallons then yes, I'll hold confidence in my lowfuel light

You are fooling yourself.

But hey, it's a free country! You are free to use a bogus method, and free to be happy in your ignorance, and free to reap the results of thinking you know your mileage, when you don't.

Carry on!
