I have 91 cherokee 4.0. My battery went dead so i replaced it but now the engine won't start. It starts up for a second but then dies. THis has happened before and a good battery fixed it but this time it just won't start. Any Ideas?

Welcome to CF! I'm not too familiar with the 4.0, so I'll let the 6-cyl. officianado's come to your rescue! Good luck!

Try jumping it with another vehicle this will tell if the battery you have has what it needs to keep it running. I have bought several bad batteries , dead cell , flat short, bad plates, most batteries sit for long periods of time prior to when you buy them so it may not be fully charged.

I have tried to jump it and ive tried 3 different batteries. Ive got good fuel pressure. ill check the spark but since it fires up and then dies i would think spark isn't an issue. Also the security light flashes at me? what is that for? i'm fairly new to xj's so any help would be awsome.

Not sure if it is the same thing, but a couple of years back I had a battery issue with my jeep. I cranked it up drove around the block, cut off the ignition and went back inside (forgot something). When I tried to crank it again, I got nothing. No attempt to turn over no interior lights no power at all. As if the battery had been removed. Up to this point I was not getting any issues what suggested my battery was not keeping a charge or that my alternator was failing to supply a charge.

When I replaced this battery, I found that the engine would die if I did not keep my foot on the pedal. I am not terribly knowledgeable about such things but it seemed that the engine was not idling fast enough. I sat in the jeep for 20min or so and kept the rpms high enough to prevent stalling. Afterwards it cranked fine. I never drove it while it had this issue so I cannot speak to engine performance under load. I have used the same battery for 4+ years without issue, and in that same time the alternator has also behaved itself.
