I got a 89 cherokee with 239,000 miles and well its got a little problem with the engine heating up.
I will go drive the jeep for maybe about 30 minutes and within that time my Temperature gauge starts to increase.. It will go up in minutes to a high temp.. I dont know what i should do about this... I dont want to break or damage any major engine parts.
I need to replace my engine coolant bottle for it has a crack on the top and it tends to bubble with fluid through the crack after being run..
Iff anyone knows what causes my temperatur gauge to shoot up rapidly i could use ur help!!
Thanks 89 Cherokee

Hi, I would change the thermostat with a 192 degree one and flush the system. I would also change the bottle and check to see if the electric fan is coming on (you can test this by putting the AC on) if not you may want to see if you can jump out the fan to a switch so you can put it on whenever you want...Tj
I'd say thermostat, and run some cleaner through your cooling system to make sure your rad and other components are working fine. Is it going all the way to red? how soon does it take to happen? does the temperature ever go down?
I chased the same problem on my 88 for about 6 months. Finally i put in an open cooling system(has radiator cap) from a newer jeep and replaced all my hoses flushed everything out refiled and put in a bottle of water wetter and since everything is fine.
My parents Jeep Cherokee did the same thing years ago and we could never figure it. It would heat up then boil out through the cap. So one day we replaced the cap and it cleared up and we never had a problem.
I would try replacing the bottle for sure, especially with the crack.

You are driving a XJ with a closed cooling system so if the bottle is cracked that is BAD!
Replace it.
IF overheating is what caused the bottle to crack then I am sure it is time for a new water pump remember the vehicle you are driving is 20 years old so be prepared to start changing out old engine components.
