also if your block is good and just the head is bad, change out the head with a 91-98 head (stay away from the 99-01 with head casting 0331). these are just some suggestions. but i would still check out the motor for yourself on monday, also ask the mechanic what is actually wrong with it. tell him that you don't want him to dumb it down, just what to know "exactly" what is wrong with it. have him type it out on an estimate, then type that out on here. then we can give you some (hopefully helpful) advice on what route to take next.

Good info.. Thanks slick. Here when you are not in a "smog control district" you only need to smog once to get the title in your name. I may look at that HO someday for my 90.
Smoke Eh? Sure it wasn't white steam, or was it blueish smoke? Anyway, real good news that the second guy hasn't even looked at it yet. You may well be fine....Smoke Eh?

Hey guys, still havent heard back from the shop, but my brother has a 94 grand cherokee that seems to have a problem somewhere else in the car. If there is something wrong with my head, could i just take the head off of his? WOuld it fit mine. He has the 4.0 as well.

Well it's not quite as simple as just swapping the head, as slick pointed out here...
But you should be able to pull enough parts from the donor to pull it off.
It's not just that easy changing the head from renix to h.o. you have to use the later intake manifold and modify the map and throttle. Also later Intakes do not use egr because the cam is ground different getting rid of the need. Won't cause Drivability issues but might cause smog issues.

you think it would be cheaper to just get another one the same as mine or do that and get the newer stuff? Id be better off getting the newer stuff even if it is more expensive right? and would it work even though its a grand cherokee and not an xj?

Dude, if I read this correctly u are 16. That means little money, maybe a job and school. If u dont have one, get a job, make some money and wrench this thing yourself! U will get back 10 fold what u put into it. Talk to the guy that has your XJ, maybe u can work out a deal with him, you work at his shop after school sweepin floors and takin out trash or whatever he comes up with, and he teaches u how to turn wrenches. In turn u get your jeep fixed, land a job, and learn something. Trust me, the only times I have ever used chemistry and algebra was figuring compression ratios and deciding how much N2O i could run on a stock fuel pump. Try it.
