Default Engine cut-out

Hi,

I was driving along and after stopping to drop somebody off at the roadside, whilst pulling away the engine on my Jeep Cherokee 1995 (4.0ltr) cut out. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why this problem may have occured (e.g anti theft mechanism).

Thanks.

Need more info... Did you get it restarted? Has it ever happened before or since? did you get any warning signs? Did you get a check engine light?

We haven't managed to get it restarted. A similar problem occured a year ago and nobody could find a solution however we left the vehicle for 7 days and it started on its own accord. No warning signs have been seen on the dash.

(it's a straight 6, fuel injection engine)
Regards.

Well simplist thing to do is. Check the engine grounds you'll see it on the driver side towards the back of the block. Trace is out and make sure it's clean. Does the engine e try to turn over when you turn the key or do you get nothing at all

Read the Trouble codes, does not have to have a light to have a stored code. Test the Crank position sensor and the cam position sensor.

The engine does turn over. Where are the sensors located and where is the fuel pump?

Regards.

Just to add, for the last few weeks prior the engine has been hunting (the engine rpm increasing and decreasing on its own accord).

Thanks.

Cam sensor in the distributor, Crank sensor on the bell housing, fuel pump in the gas tank.

Sorry to be a pain but could you give us an indication on what/where the bell housing is, never heard the term before???

Thanks very much.

Bell housing is the bell shaped thing between the motor and transmission. I suggest you get a repair manual or take the Jeep to a mechanic. It is probably a simple repair but if you don't know what things are called.. you will end up spending extra money and time chasing down your problem.

Since you said that you did have the same problem a while back I would check out your CPS (crank shaft position sensor). Like the others said it is on the bell housing drivers side at about the 11o'clock position.
Also don't worry about asking questions. How else will you learn. It will be a good idea to pick up a shop manual that we you can locate the parts and also figure out what a lot of the terms mean.

SEARCH is your friend here.

The crank sensor is the most common engine management sensor failure on the Jeep 4.0 engine. If it fails, you will not have spark and you will not have fuel going TO the injectors. They can be tested, but testing is not always conclusive. I'd recommend it though. If you do end up buying one, buy it directly from Jeep for the best reliability and longevity. Well worth the extra $20. No lack of people with aftermarket crank sensors having issues......

The "hunting" you describe could be a separate issue.

Is the crank sensor something external that we can replace quite easily or is it internal and more difficult?

Thanks.
