91-95 guaranteed, 96 I think the block is the same but the gadgetry is OBD2. Not 100% sure on 97+. TJ and YJ blocks have different accessory brackets and engine mounts and don't fit into the XJ bay without significant work. I think a ZJ one might be a direct swap though

I have a 99 XJ and the engine code is still an "S". I also have a 98 XJ which has an "S" engine code. The intake manifold, and the fuel injectors are different on the 99. Some late 99's I have heard, have different heads, the dreaded 0331 head. There has been some debate on this subject on this forum. I am not an expert on the subject so I can not speak with any authority about the 0331 heads on the late 99 models. I hope this information helps you out.

Yes and no lol i stay away from the 99-01 just for that issue also i think 91-01 are all s code i think lol my 92 is a s i could use any cherokee engine but i dont wanna screw wit the electronics theres in the xj family 3 diff 4.0s renix odb1 and odb2 2 different ignition systems and i think 3 different fuel systems i could be wrong anyway im just lookin for a low mileage drop in and was wondering bout different models and it looks like a 93-95 zj is drop in as well

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.
