Clean grounds and connectors and tey again. Grounds is a big one. Dont just look at them and think they are fine. Physically take them off clean them and hook them back up. Nearly any XJ is going to be old enough at this point to benefit from new power and ground cables.
thanks everyone. I feel good about the next round of service. she'll be ok. she's a good girl. it runs so well and is fine in all other categories. if i can solve this, we're golden. tell you what though...i've spent more time, wrenching and money on this blasted thing than any vehicle.
Quick update. I finally got a chance to flush out the trans fluid and put all Dex/Merc in. The fluid was very nasty. I haven't pulled apart the ground by the dipstick, so I haven't accomplished everything I planned yet. It hasn't gone into limp mode with new fluid. However, I am still experiencing what I think someone called 'flairing' (maybe I'm wrong on that). It will quickly jump down a gear and return to normal sometimes. Like its confused, basically.
I'll get the grounds cleaned/re-done soon. Lots going on. My brother and I have been restoring a couple old Sea Doo XPs. We're going to the lake to test tomorrow and staying the weekend.

The dipstick ground refresh takes less than half an hour..............
should do this also:

Over near the transmission dipstick tube are 2 rather large connectors. One is black and goes to the NSS and the gray connector goes to the transmission itself

. These 2 connectors carry all the info between TPS, TCU, NSS, speed sensor, and transmission solenoids.
Unplug each one, visually inspect for corrosion or bent pins, spray them out with electrical contact cleaner and plug them back in.
Additionally, if your Jeep is an ’87 to ’90 Renix, it’s always a good idea to reach up under the glovebox area and unplug the connector to the TCU and spray it out along with the receptacle of the TCU. While you’re there, find the fuse right in that area for the TCU. Remove it and spray out it’s receptacle and clean any corrosion from the fuse.

Then if he's got low miles on the oil and it's "stinky" (since ATF doesn't spoil, a la "milk" or "fish"), I'm thinking "burnt". Mayhaps there's another issue underfoot.
I took apart and cleaned the grounds on dipstick. I took apart the connectors and cleaned them. There was definitely some sand and **** in the connectors. It really seems to be acting better. I'm still in break in period on my new gears so I'm stuck with 15 minutes of driving at a time. Also can't do highway time right now because of gears. But, I'm cautiously optimistic. Thanks again.
To clarify on the trans oil. I had done a filter and solenoids a few months ago...so there was a fresh gallon. And I did another round of solenoids two weeks ago (no filter). So there's another gallon. But I have no idea how long it went before I got it. Like I said. The stuff I pumped out was burned/stinky....over a gallon before it started cleaning up. And obviously, I just let loose the inlet to the trans cooler and started the jeep and let it come out 3/4 of gallon at a time. Add more fluid. Repeat.
