Here's a scan right out of my smog manual you can see that the MIL wasn't until 1991 the early ones just had SRI which means service reminder indicator and no MIL.

I just bought a 1990 jeep Cherokee Laredo and the smog was due this year so I took it and it passed but the tech said I needed to take care of a few things before he could pass it. Two dried and cracking hoses for the evap system and that stupid light. Which btw, ive been trying to trace and figure out why it wouldn't come on. So glad I saw this posting cuz that was stressing me out! I was about to wire it to the seatbelt light! .
