It would definitely run cooler with the hood off considering heat rises...

I don't think I would need to tell you that that isn't the ideal way of getting it to run cooler.........

Put it in the shade just lift the hood and put a box fan on it...

That's not a bad idea to do temporarily, just for the rest of your drive.

Hopefully you have some basic hand tools with you?

Turn the heater on full blast to supplement your radiator. If your Aux radiator fan isn't on, jumper it on full time.

Run some self tappers through the fan clutch to get a 1:1 on the belt driven fan. Chances are the clutch is going out. I had to do it when I was in a bind and my temps were just barely under 210 and never rose above that on hill climbs even. Before the fix I was maxed in the red.

If the clutch hasn't been replaced recently or if the miles on the clutch are unknown, it wouldn't hurt to just go get one or temp fix the one you have with the self tappers and replace it when you get to your destination.

not sure about 99 but unplugging coolant temp switch should cause cooling fan to run gonna throw a check engine light but better than buying a motor

Yeah I was gunna point that out since you have a 99. It is possible you have the weak head. In which case, I wouldn't risk driving it at all until you get the overheating under control

Crack the hood open and run on the safety catch. Radiator will be more effective and you will get a ram air effect over the engine.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. had it back on the road and just kept all my fluids up. Ran hot all the rest of the way to Phoenix. The second half of the trip wasn't as bad. But now I've developed a nice tic...

Oh I also added some hood spacers. About an inch up. Seems fine here in Texas so far. Except that tic... My dad says it sounds like my rockers are rattling. Are the ones on the 4.0 adjustable?
