Default Emergancy problem

So I'm on my way to a store today in Conroe and my temp light comes on didn't think anything of it turned the heat all the way up and it went off turned it off and it comes back on this time it didn't go off and started getting really hot so I pull into a gas station to check the radiator and maybe put water in it cuz I know a have an anti freeze leak. As I make the second turn into the parking lot u hear a very loud bang and suddenly lost my power steering. I make it to a spot pop the hood and my belt broke and got wrapped up on the mechanical fan and broke the fan shroud. My question is what caused all this?

what condition is the belt in, other than broke, does it look like is was rubbing and just lost too much and then broke, or it was it really old and brittle

I don't have any idea about the overheating issue, but you might look real close at the harmonic balancer. Sometimes they wear out and the outside (pulley) no longer lines up with the belt causing it to hop off. Just my $.02

try putting a new belt on and then check the angle of all your pullys. I had to change my ideler pully bolt because it was all worn threw about a third of the way threw. the bolt being worn a bunch caused the pully to sit at an angle. I bet when you put on a new belt you will see the problem when you tighten the belt up.

Doesn't explain the overheating, but I noticed that if you drop a washer the size of a nickel in the right place the belt sort of explodes and winds up in the fan. There is sort of a "maw" where the belt goes down around the right side of the crank pulley. Try it sometime! Pretty impressive!
I'd check everything well, X2 on the idler, put another belt on it and proceed slowly! Maybe pull the coil wire and crank it a bit first. Maybe after you run it a minute stop and see if you can find a bearing getting hot.

Just thought of something, two months though.....my new belt loosened up a tad when it was "run in" a bit. I tightened it a bit a week after I installed it. (yes, I run it as loose as I can). Wonder if your new belt was just loose.

Wonder what was driving the fan as it cut the belt ?

If the belt was slipping that would explain the overheating.Yeah we'll get right on ruining a belt so we can run out and buy a new one for shi_'s and giggle's.Name: twak.gif
