Default electrical! and starting

i have an 89 xj i just bought, first off the owner said there was a current draw,i tryed what people said to do to try to tell where its coming from, i disconnected the negitive and volt tested it positive lead on the ground and postive wire on the ground pole on the battery, it read 12.5 ......... thats not posible is it i must have done it wrong?
i had it on the car trailer for 6 hours id have fried the battery wouldnt i?

also, the jeep starts hard, takes about 3 or 4 seconds of cranking to start, and then it runs great? what would cause this? the jeep has been siting around a bit but its fuel injected? anyone have any ideas?

thanks a ton

i cant help on the battery problem, but your jeep has a renix "computer" it has to read 300 rpm before it will allow the jeep to start. this is the reason for the delay start on te older jeeps.

?? I posted a link on how to test for drain on the battery, Cherokee90 is correct that for your vintage XJ, the slightly longer cranking time is normal. The ECU ("computer") doesn't fire the motor until it reaches a certain speed for a certain amount of time while cranking.

Gotcha. Agreed that more ideas are always good. I wasn't sure if you had a question on something already posted is all.

12.5? Are you reading volts by chance, instead of amps? That's a considerable amount of stray current. (but fairly normal voltage reading)

That explains my 87 cranking for so long, thought it was just me, thanks!

Try pulling fuses one at a time to see if you can eliminate the draw. Also disconnect the alternator output wire as a separate test.
