A bad ground somewhere in the brake light system.
Corroded brake light bulb socket.
I would do a thorough inspection of the park light, marker light, turn signal, and brake light functions. Might get a clue from that.

Check your brake light bulbs. Had this happen in an old S10. One of the the bulbs was shorting within itself. Every time I hit the brakes it would send power through the running light wires.

Do those new-fangled 2001s have some kind of flasher/lighting module up under the passenger side dash?

Pull one brake bulb and hit the pedal. If the problem is still there put it back. If the problem goes away you found the culprit. Repeat for other brake light bulb if necessary. If that doesn't fix it then you start at one end of the wiring harness and work your way to the other. Anyplace there is a plug you can disconnect it and hit the pedal to see if it fixes it. Electrical shorts are not fun to track down. Good luck.
