electrical nightmare!
well ill start off saying this is my first Cherokee I just bought a 2000 4dr Cherokee sport with 194,000 miles well after having it a day my CEL came on but didn't have any noticeable issues going on and I pulled the codes p1698 , p1694. Well the next day I shut it down get out push the lock button to lock my doors and nothing happened so I start it up and try the locks again and locks don't work but when I push the lock button my rear windshield wiper turns on wtf right! So I left it alone for the night , so when I get off work I start driving and bam all my gauges go down CEL comes on and odometer reads no bus but so far 2 day still runs fine and gauges came back once but went out again. So dash lights, headlights, brake lights, windows, mirrors center dome light all work fine, but turn signals, gauges, push button dome light, lock button don't work and my rear wiper is on all the time and also when the jeep is shut down my rear defrost button light stays on and so does my 4wd shift lever lights. Im lost cause I know nothing about electronics! any help would be amazing thanks

Wow.
I usually like to help with electrical issues, but there's one long run on mess of words there. That's tough to decipher. There are reasons for basic writing rules.
I you can't take the time to write proper sentences so that people don't have to work at figuring out what you said, I can't take the time to help you.

If I read and understood correctly, this sounds very much like an issue someone else was having recently on a 2000. Turned out to be a ground. I believe it was either the ground for dash or for clockspring.
Hope it is something simple. Those with the 2000's might be able to help more if you could clarify.

As for the instrument cluster dropping out. If all the gauges are still not working give the dash a good firm slap and see if the start working again. If so you either have a loose connection or dirty contacts. I really don't know it would be related to your other problems. But the problem with the gauges is pretty common.
thanks Steve I also hope its a simple fix and to ******* I would use your name on here but it seems this fits you well. Looks like you might take some of your own advise next time you write something and hell I didn't know this was an English class. The More important issue here is the fact you took the time just to be a dick instead of doing nothing at all shows you got bigger issues compared to me at the moment.

Easy now, BlueRidge was making a valid point. As a group we seem to prefer good grammar and some punctuation. Otherwise eye strain and headaches result.

I know I was having some issues with the locks and gauges not working properly and it turned out to be my bulkhead connection for the main wire harness was not tight. I (with the battery disconnected of course) disconnected the harness and used a tooth brush to clean the connections then applied some dialectic grease and re connected it. No more issues for me so maybe check that as well.

The concept of electrics is hard to grasp for me; I'll admit that weakness to anyone. And, we've all had stages/years of general bad attitudes/moodiness in our lives (you old fogies were young once, too
)
rrembold: what a frustration, having just bought the vehicle and you are now looking at quite a problem. For future success in all your adventures, a few words to live by: honey attracts the fly, don't bite the hand that feeds you, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, if you don't have anything nice to say... catch my drift
good luck!

rrembold,
If you're still there...
All those faults, including the PCM CCD Bus communication problems, look like they are associated with chassis grounds not finding their way to the battery ground post.
The first order of business when experiencing mysterious electrical problems is to verify the electrical ground points in the engine bay are free from corrosion and are secure.
First, check the battery cable connectors for corrosion. Remove them from the battery (negative first, then positive) clean the inside of the connectors and the posts. Reinstall securly (positive first then negative).
Next, there is a short cable going from the battery (-) post to the right inner fender. This is the main battery to chassis ground. Remove the fastener and clean the wire ring terminal using a 3M Scotch Brite pad, clean the bolt with a wire wheel or brush, sandpaper the mating surface on the fender to remove all rust, reinstall securely.
Next, go to the main battery to engine ground, located on the lower right side of the engine, near the alternator. There are two studs there which are the engine grounds for the battery, PCM, TCM, and O2S heaters. Detach them and clean the ring terminals like you did with the battery to fender connection.
Next, there is a braided strap that goes from the firewall to the rearmost cylinder head bolt on the left side. This is primarily a radio interference suppression device but it is also a secondary chassis to engne to battery ground. Clean and secure like the battery to fender connection.
Do these things and clear all codes then see if the problems/codes reappear.
I can post up photos of these ground points if you need.
Good luck.
