electric choke issues

Default electric choke issues

I hope someone can help. I am having trouble getting the choke to work on my 86 2.8l xj. the choke will not kick off. For a little back ground: it is the rochester e2se carb and I just replaced the choke, I also have tested the connection and it is getting proper power 12-15v (avg 13.6). I am not that familiar with carburetors so I am kind of learning as I go.

Here's my question:
when I install the new choke, should I have it so that the choke is wide open or closed? I hooked it up to be wide open but it did not kick on, so i did it manually.

I understand that the spring is supposed to expand when it gets hot and thus open the choke, but how does the system close the choke if at cold it is wide open?

Also how long should it take to heat the spring and open the choke?

where the electric wire attachs are you adjusting spring tension by looseing the three screw and turning the plastic cap

Not yet, that's what I am trying to determine. should I turn it so that the choke is on when cold, that is if I had the carb off the engine and I installed the choke should it have been at the "closed" position?

with carb cold like in the morning adjust it so it just closes

Thanks, I think I figured out why it is not working. When the spring is heated it is contracting and coiling clockwise. But in order to release the choke it would need to expand or go counter-clockwise. hopefully that makes sense. so no matter how much the spring in the choke heats up, it will only hold the choke on. now I need to figure out how to turn things around so that it works

take cover off turn spring around?

I was able to get it so that it's working, I'm sure it will need further adjusting in the morning when it's good and cold.

Now that that's out of the way, any thoughts on why the idle would be higher in neutral/park? It is probably a good 200-300 rpm's higher and I think that is contributing to my dieseling problem.

The idle will be higher in park or neutral with a carb engine.
