There are a lot of tips and tricks that suggest access holes (no access holes on an '89 unless you start cutting into your floorboard which just seems silly, to me). The task can be accomplished with no cutting or RTV and it can be done alone in less than 15 minutes... probably not the first time, because you're learning, things are often more difficult the first time? Don't make it more complicated than it is.

Slide in feet first under the driver's side door which puts your arms in a much better position to reach the CPS, use a long extension or a collection of shorter ones with a wobble on the end. Taping the wobble is a good idea to limit movement. I also like to stick a little magnet on or in the socket to prevent the bolts from falling into the bell housing when they come loose.

As far as the "spacer", never seen or heard of that. Mine didn't have one and it would have been pointless, anyway. The bolts have a shoulder on them that is the exact diameter of the holes on the CPS providing a far more precise fitment than any piece of cardboard will. Don't forget to strap the harness lead to the firewall after you've connected it. If you don't, it will melt to your header... Really. It will. I'm not kidding. Big stinky mess. I was told to do this but thought, "Meh, how important could that step be? Looks fine". Sixty seconds later I was like, "Heeeeey! That doesn't smell right."

Pretty sure it is on top of the bellhousing at about the 10 or 11 o'clock position. Sitting in the driver's seat. Pretty sure the cable runs over the top of the bellhousing to the passenger side. I think mine in my '00 is bad too. Weather kinda sucks but I am going to try and get out there to do the resistance test and clean up the connectors with some electrical cleaner. If I do I will verify what I think I know.

Edit: About 11 o'clock like I thought but is behind one of the O2 Sensor connectors still on the driver's side. I am by myself and can spot the loom from the top for the CPS but I need a second person up top to tell me I am wiggling the right wire from below.

I used like a gang of 3/8" extensions (probably all that I had), and a wobble adapter or two. Didn't take me that long from what I remember, but I am sure having a lift makes it easier

My wife and I visited Scotland back in 2012. We stayed in Broughty Ferry,Dundee but we went several places Loch Ness, St.Andrews,Stirling,Edinbourgh. We loved Scotland and would move there if we could. I own a 1996 Cherokee SE 2 door with the 4.0 H.O. motor and I am having hard starting issues. So I believe its the CPS. I read this thread today and saw your post.
