E-14 torx bolt
so today I was trying to get the last bolts loose. to remove the engine. 89 xj. I6. the drivers side E14 came off ok. the passenger side rolled. and has now damaged the head.
what are my options. pull the T-case? will the motor and auto tranny, fit out in one piece???
anyone have any awesome tricks to get it out.

If there's enough of the head left to play with (and you have enough room to work), these work quite well. You just find the right size, hammer it on, then unscrew the thing with a socket or wrench.

I thought they were E-12.
Did you remove/loosen any other engine to trans bolts before those?

ya it turns out they are e12. I couldn't get it on. so I assumed it was one size up. YES I have all the other bolts out. IT'S THE LAST ONE Im gonna try the e12 tomorrow. but I think I messed it up bad.
I really don't wanna have to pull the t case. and try to fish the tranny out with the motor. the linkage is not being my friend right now.

My solution... better late than never, I guess!
Ok, so I bought the E-torx wrench set, promptly discovered that there has to be a better way!
Once you've got all the other stuff removed EXCEPT the lower two engine to tranny bolts, remove the motor mounts from the vehicle completely (the rubber part, not the brackets on the motor). Then simply lower the motor until the motor brackets rest on the frame mounts, and keep the hoist chain taut in case the motor slides any. Now you have almose 4 inches of space between motor and firewall , and can use an E-12 impact socket on a universal and a long extension. Hoist the engine back up, support the tranny, and remove your last two tranny bolts.
And out with the motor!

But since it seems you have stripped the bolt (which happened to me) I would take a dremel and grind off the entire bolt head. It takes 10-15 min and 2 grinding bits.

RE: "better way"
Boy, I sounded a bit Dr KnowItAll on that one! I guess I should have clarified my "better way" reference!
My "prompt" discovery of a "better way" occurred after an hour of leaving chunks of my knuckles behind on the bolts coming through the firewall right at the back of the head, as well as a complete revision of the English language . After considering the possibility of starting smoking AND drinking again, heavily, I looked it all over again and noticed all the space available by removing the mounts.
I apologize for sounding like a smarty pants!
Ultimately, whatever works best for the individual and tools/equipment at their disposal is the "better way." Remember, if nobody crashes and nobody dies, it's a good day!
