But, I only put 2 of the steering box bolts back in cuz one was bent. I plan on replacing all 3 today with new ones.
Can a missing bolt let the box move enough for me to hear it? It's the top one.
Also...
I couldn't get my pitman arm bolted on as tightly on the new box as the old one. I can see in a pic above that there's space between the arm and box, and it's about as much space as I have, but I don't have as many threads sticking out the bottom. Is that cool?
Aaaand, when I reattached the steering shaft to the input shaft new box, I can still see some splines on the input shaft. It doesn't seem like the steering shaft joint/bolt thing is supposed to go all the way down. Is this correct?

Thanks for the help guys, I'm used to working on VW's...
as long as the threads of the pitman arm nut are poking out a little, and the torque is correct, you'll be fine. I found out when I did this on mine that the arm wouldn't go on the new box as far as the old (same as you), but it's been fine.

As far as the steering shaft - it should go all the way down on the input. It may take some "coaxing" to make it happen.

here's what mine looks like:

When you say bump steer, exactly what do you mean. I've never owned a Jeep before, so I don't now if the steering should be tight as in the previous cars I've owned (Toyota's and Subaru's)

it means when you hit a bump, it will cause the steering to turn - not good

Okay, thanks for the explanation. My situation is, which may or may not be bump steer, when I hit a pot hole or bump (speed one is the greatest example since I don't do major off road stuff), my steering wheel jumps rather harshly, but no turning as you state. I guess you could say shake, rattle, and roll. Is this just a truck/jeep thing? Based on what I've seen in other posts, am pretty sure it's not DW, as I've replaced the track bar, all ball joints & shocks, & lower sway bar link bushings, new BFG AT's all round, and a good alignment. It's possible I've not done enough, front end wise, to make it tighter.

Thanks for the pic and reply dukie.
I don't see the input shaft in your pic tho...
When I slid the steering shaft (from the steering wheel) onto the input shaft on the new box, it went on pretty easily, but only to a point. There are still a few mm of splines visible on the input shaft on the box. I tightened the bolt just fine, and the whole thing seems very secure. But is it right?
Does anyone have a pic of the full assembly totally put together from the top? Like, looking down from where the air filter would be?
Thanks again...

it's blocked in all the photos I have. I'm positive I managed to get mine to slide all the way onto the input shaft after a bit of swearing. If it's only out a couple mm though i dunno if i'd worry about it though...
