In The Dumps
Wow. It took me forever to figure out how to post on here.
So my problem. I purchased a 01 Jeep Cherokee Sport in October 2010 from a used car dealership. A WEEK after I got it, it started to stall out when I would come to a red light or stop sign. At first it was only every once and awhile... it would happen maybe once a week. The check engine light will come on but goes out when I restart it or by the time I get to AutoZone it's off. I'm at the point now that I'm surprised if it doesn't stall when I stop. It will give absolutely no warning that it's going to die either.
What I've tried: I replaced the cam shaft position sensor (like everyone else I've read about who has this problem).
- I've cleaned the throttle body and plates. This DID help for approximately 2 weeks.
- Then I tried to seafoam it. I put half a can in the gas tank. Probably only 1/4 went into the throttle body... it was not sounding good and was nothing like the youtube videos I watched. I don't think it helped but it didn't hurt it.
- I did a STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner additive to the gas.
- I've checked the fuses.
- I've checked the that random screw on the ECU/ECM that affects older models Cherokees (not so much 2001's)
- Oh, and I've disconnected the negative terminal on the battery (Someone told me that it resets the computer)
Hopefully I can get some help here. Another issue is that I'm in Guam, I can't take the car to a mechanic unless it really REALLY REALLY really needs to go to a mechanic. It's hard to explain unless you've been here.

Danielle, you need to have the car scanned with an OBD2 code reader. If the check engine light keeps coming on and then going out, it it should still store the problem code in the computer.

He is correct. Find out what code/codes your Cherokee is throwing, or has thrown and go from there.
It could be many things, including O2 sensors. But get some solid information first.

Last night I cleaned all the electrical components that I could. Some I couldn't get apart. I recleaned the throttle body and plates. I will take a look at the IAC valve, I think I tried to do that before but one of the screws is so badly rusted it wouldn't budge. I'll attach a picture just to make sure I'm working on the right thing. Also... Should I replace the IAC valve or clean it?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Here's a write up on how to clean your IAC. Good luck.
