My XJ has been throwing the "Too Low. Lift NOW" code and I need to clear my CEL. Unfortunately, funds are really tight right now, so 'doing it right' is not in the cards at the moment. As I attempt to slowly build my collection of lift parts, I have come across a sweet deal on wheels and tires. The problem is they are 31's and I'm at stock height.
What kind of rubbing can I expect without trimming? Will it be occasional and only at full turn, or is it just plain foolish to put 31s on an otherwise stock XJ? A 3"+ lift is in the card for the near future, so this WOULD NOT be a permanent deal.
How does backspacing play into this?

i've never tried, but i got a 2" bb on tired springs and my 31's rub on full turns, and ate the flares on the trail.

According to my understanding from this forum, my buddy has snorted too much crack to be reliable. Is that a safe conclusion?
