Doub't u'll find a trans temp gauge......a coolant temp gauge and the corresponding sending unit that goes with it (very important) plumbed correctly should work fine. Fluid temp out of the tranny is the important one.
at one time you could buy aftermarket transmission coolers that have a built in thermostat, & they would bypass the cooler until the fluid temp got to a certain point, & then it would allow it to go through the cooler.

why do you say that? both B&M and autometer make one. i'm running the B&M one in mine and have been for 6 yrs now. the B&M one even comes with the line fittings and wiring.

I was presuming the OP was talking about finding a factory tranny temp gauge (post #16)....and referring to the OP going to his local JY and getting the temp gauge out of the ZJ he's been removing parts from.

if your not hauling a stock cooler should do just fine, it doesnt hurt to install a temp gauge. In mine i had an autometer mechanical temp gauge mounted in the pan with the gauge at the bottom of my A-pillar combine with B&Ms largest cooler i think its like 7x8x1, i ran large as i had an old tent trailer that weighed in around 1500Lbs and having 3.55s with 32s had a tenancy to produce a fair bit of heat more so than the old AW4 can handle. on you typical day running temp was around 200*F.........over heated it a couple times though but thats my own doing in pushing it too hard and not paying attention to my gauge, 230-240 she starts to slip by about 260 you loose almost all power....
if you want pics i have some of the gauge and probe location, give ya some ideas.
