Default Drum Brake Parts question

So I'm rebuilding my drum brakes since the cylinder is leaking. They're stock, never been replaced before. I ordered this rebuild kit since it seems the most complete.

I started putting the drum back together again but came across a clip and a crush washer for each side. I'm not entirely sure what they are for. I'm not seeing them on the parts that I removed from my jeep.

Any ideas?

Jeep is a 99 Jeep Cherokee XJ

They both go to the attachment post for the e brake lever to the trailing brake shoe.

Interesting, I didn't have those on the original e brake lever when I removed it. The lever was just connected in place by a small tab of metal that sticks out of it. I don't think I have that little black gromit thing in the photo you posted...unless it's this thing that came with the kit. I had assumed this brass looking gromit was for the shoes but the shoes I bought already had one installed.

The hardware kits are somewhat generic. They dont know what shoes you bought, some come with the pin installed. Some do not so they give you one. After you install the lever on the pin you can put on the spring washer then the U clip. You then bend the ends of the U together with a pair of pliers so it cant fall off

That post is on the web of the shoe, not the lever, the clip & washer are to allow you to fit the one you remove from the old shoes.

Thanks, I think the U Clip and washer are also just added pieces in case I need them, because I have no place for them on my e brake lever. There's a metal piece on the lever that's in the shape of a claw that slides right up into the back of the brake shoe and locks the lever into place. I'll post some photos when I take my passenger side drum apart so you guys can see.

So here's a photo of the e brake level. It has that hook at the top that slides into the back of the shoe and locks into place. So I'm thinking the u clip and washer are just extras for drum brakes that need them.

As I thought I'd explained, you are looking at the wrong component

The u clip and washer is what I was really trying to figure out about. After looking at a bunch of diagrams, it appears they're for older jeep drum brakes so I just ignored them. #4 is the u clip if I'm not mistaken. https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...MygKegUIARDeAQ

Yep, that is what I was referring too. I had not seen the hooked top type pivot on the parking brake lever, I only found it on TJ brake diagrams. If your lever is hinging, and there is a post to put the adjuster spring, you're good.

My Rule # 2 when doing drum brakes...one side at a time so I can go look at the other one for reference. Learned it the hard way😛

Thanks! I wrapped everything up and have been driving around. So far nothing's locked up or broken *knock on wood* so I think I'm safe now ha ha.

@oldnslow 100% agree. That and take lots of photos before taking them apart. Both helped me out a lot when putting everything back together again.
