Long time, no post.

1991 4.0L XJ, Automatic Transmission.

A U-Joint failed and I dropped my rear driveshaft. I am driving now without the shaft because I have to until I can fix it.

I have read that I should place a stopper or seal at the transfer case to avoid fluid loss, but wasn't sure if this pertained to my year. One post even mentioned using a soda bottle. Is this correct?

you dont have to place a stopper or anything. only if you have one of the older older model cherokees, not sure what specific year it was but im sure youll be okay cause yours is a 91..did you at anytime just take a look to see if your spilling fluid?? that should answer your question pretty quickly, but since the yoke is still there and your Tcase isnt open you should be good.

 

If he doesn't have a sye then there isn't a yoke anymore, it's advisable to find something to seal it in the mean time

U-joints = not that expensive.

Why not fix instead of wasting money to stop ur fluid pooring out?

 

Pre 96.

 

I broke my rear ujoint and yoke and it spit the rear drive line out.. I lost quite a bit of my oil on the 5 mile drive back home on my 91.

This is not right.

Once the yoke is gone there's a big hole... The seal fits around the yoke.

You need to not drive on the front only.

Buy a 6 dollar u-joint and fix it.
