Guys..... forget ALL OF THAT... !
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET YOURSELFS 2" {4} NEW 5/16" SELF TAPPING SCREWS AND A LETTER "F" drillbit.
FIRST MARK WHERE THE BOLTS ARE NEEDED USING THE NEW SHOCK.
RIGHT NEXT TO THE BROKEN SCREWS MAKE UR HOLES FOR THE UPPER SHOCK MOUNT.
PLACE THE SHOCK ABSORBER AND ALING SHOCK TO HOLES.
INSERT SELF TAPPING SCREWS ~ SCrEWS WILL MAKE NEW TREAD ON HOLE
TIGHTEN TILL THEY ARE FULLY IN AND TIGHT!!!
This ELIMINATES ALL THE PROBLEMS OF 2 PEOPLE , REMOVING THE CARPET, ECT. ECT.... I HAVE DONE THIS TO VARIOUS JEEPS AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS!!!!!

Have you checked into using tire bolts in the spots?
Although, I do like the idea the last guy had about bolts from the top. Maybe a little mig touch? Big washers.
Good luck, stay off the highway, I'd hate to see our ranks decimated by even one.

i had that happen when i had to replace the whole rear end when it locked up on me goin 50(ring and pinion grinded some teeth). i just went to rustys and got some bar pin eliminators... i mean you still gotta drill em out and tap the holes but its worth it and you wont have to deal with them ever again. so much easier

I did this as well. Tied fishing line to bolts and fed them through the holes in the crossmember/frame there. Took a whole 15 minutes.
I know this is an old post, but I broke the bolts in the upper rear shock mounts on my xj. I'm also thinking about using the rear swaybar mounts as bar pin eliminators. All I have to do it drill out the broken bolts and run new one through so I can bolt up the mounts.

Hell man, don't you think after 11 years you can do it easier! Take a punch and knock out the weldnuts. Go buy repair plates that slip into the area behind the mounting cup, and run new bolts into them. The repair plates are Y shaped with a handle end on them so you can hold them in place until you start the first bolt. DONE! Google is your friend.
