Hey i cant offer any solutions but im wondering if your issue started like mine. One day you throw the jeep in reverse and you hear/feel a grinding noise faintly. All of my issues started after breaking a transmission mount in mud. Now I just feather the gas in reverse and a very loud grinding noise results, it still moves but is getting worse. Am I heading your way too??? I changed the trans filter, had it flushed, refilled. I have no idea why its doing this only in reverse. I read your thread and it kinda spooked me out. I hoped it would just go away but it never did.

Have you tried putting yours into low 1?
I am not sure at this point if its the transmission or TC (transfer case). My trans mount bolts were slightly loose a few weeks ago and it was causing a clunk under my feet, one is sheared/broke off. It looks as if the TC has been changed out with one from a junk yard and i figured thats when the bolts were loosened and the one was broken, I didnt think this could be related until now.

If you can block your front wheels and put the rear on jack stands so the rear tires are of the ground like they told me to do. If your tires will not spin in reverse i would bargain to say we have the same problem.

If thats the case maybe we can find the solution together, it seems this problem has got most the guys on here stumped.

"PM from BLKXJ 96":

First check all the fluids: AW4 trans at idle in neutral at operating temp, fill with Dexron fluid only. T-case is a 10mm allen, you may want to just drain and refill it checking the old fluid for parts and pieces of gears (takes 2 quarts of ATF) fill until fluid comes out of the top hole.

NEXT: put the jeep on jackstands, then rotate all the wheels by hand feeling for any binding in the front and rear axles.

I would also pop the shift linkage off at the T -case and shift it by hand to make sure it is in the correct gear and is not causing it to bind.

Also warn trans and motor mounts will cause the engin and trans to move more then normal, this could cause your shift linkage on the T-case to bind and possibly put the T-case between gears.

Well I found a few answers from Jeepforum.com. As I suspected it is probably not the TC due to the low 1-2 issue which leaves the transmission. So, today I will be changing the filter and fluid. Not sure if it is going to help but i would rather pay 30 bucks and hope then just jump into buying a JY transmission for 300 bucks. I can always swap out the new filter if i have to buy a trans from the JY anyway.

Is there anything i should be aware of when changing the filter?
Since I do not have an owners manual how many quarts of fluid do I need?
Been alot of debate about what type of fluid to use, is Dexcron III correct?
Do the trans-pan bolts need to be torqued to any certain specs?
Anything else I should know?

Well thats a thought.. about low gear. I have always had an issue with the stupid thing tryin to shift into 4L...always ended up grinding gears then getting the manual out and embarassing myself. Ill try to shift into 4L sometime today and try to check the rear. Btw your sheared bolt...it seems alot of our warnings are coming from those things like loose linkages and i want to know if those things could be due to just age and if so do they create downstream issues? I read a while back that the linkage for the TC lever can be mis adjusted and can cause the TC to screw itself up. I replaced those bushings in the linkage and everything was fine till that morning I backed up.

Problem Solved but not yet fixed. The tranny completely went Wednesday so, Today I will be pulling it out and replacing it with a JY tranny for $200.
I have replaced transmissions before but never on a 4x4. I hope its not much harder.
Has anyone tackled this recently?
Any thing I should know?
Any tricks to make it easier, besides having someone else do it, lol.
