Thats a good idea, a week ago when it was on the lift getting tires changed they all four spun fine but it wasnt having this problem then.

Could a sheared gear in the diff be causing any of this? Seems like it would have the same problem in drive if that were the case.

I just checked the tranny fluid level again and it is still reading high so I am going to have to drain some..I will never take another vehicle to a big chain oil change place again.
to full can cause problems also

check your TC linkage if the TC is not locked in to the right spot
it could be causing some grinding noises

I know that an overfull tranny can cause blown seals but could it cause it to slip and grind?

The linkage seemed tight...not sure exactly what i would be checking for other than that...it does seem like there is some excessive play in the front drive shaft also.

Jacked up the back tires.
the wheels spin fine forward with it in neutral without the jeep running but I cannot get them to spin backwards by hand at all.
With it running in reverse at idle the wheels spin fine but there is a whining coming from the TC. In low 1-2 the wheels do not spin even if i give it a bit of gas. I did get them to spin by giving it more gas and heard the grinding sound from the TC or front differential.
There was no delay to get power to the rear wheels in either forward or reverse which does not rule out the tranny but its seeming unlikely.

With the tranny in park and the drive selector in neutral the rear tires spin freely both ways without any noise.

Any thoughts before i rip off the front drive shaft?

its not the front that isn't moving the way you tested
it is defiantly in the TC
sounds like something is broken

I bet if you pull the drain plug you get metal fragments

I actually meant rear differential..lol..I was so tired.
But yeah, I was leaning toward the TC too. As long as the chain isnt messed up it looks like i can get a rebuild kit for under 200 which isnt bad considering the price i paid for the jeep. I expected to put some cash into it. So now on to educate myself on how to rebuild a transfer case.
Will pulling the front drive shaft be a temporary fix? I am not certain how a 4WD setup works.

If the internals of the tcase are damaged then pulling the front shaft is delaying the final catastrophe. (See attached photo). You may be able to find a replacement tcase for a reasonable price.

Thank you for the link, However when i put in the info for my jeep the only choices it gives me on the TC is 231 and 242, mine is 272 i think.

It will be a 231 or a 242. The easy way to tell is look at the tag located on the tcase. Or just look at the shift pattern. 231 is 2H 4H N 4L, the 242 is 2wd 4part time 4full time N 4lo.

***Update***

I checked closer the linkage to the TC and its kinda screwed up, since i do not know the parts by name i will describe them the best I can.

The rod that runs across from the body to the TC is not fitting into the hole/mount in the TC and the bushings for the other rods are quite worn.
After putting the rod that runs across back into its mount it seemed i had less slippage.

What is concerning me is like i said when i put the transmission into low 1-2 the jeep will not move..its as if the rear tires are locked. If this is a TC problem why would that be happening? Could it be the transmission, maybe the torque converter?
