Default Driveshaft Interchangeability ...??

I'm looking to pick up a replacement D-shaft for my 99, 4.0, 242 t-case and have searched to no avail to determine if a late model 231 t-case d-shaft will swap in. My current d-shaft is fine. My plan is to change out the u-joints in a replacement shaft and then just swap in the shaft with fresh u-joints. I'll also sandblast & powder coat the replacement shaft (do it at work = free) prior to replacing the u-joints.

Then the big question, what brand u-joints and greaseable or non?

This is a DD and stock height.....Thanks....

Spicer and Moog are both good companies to go with when it comes to driveline/suspension/steering parts. I'd say look at those. Greasable vs. non-greasable is preference really. If you plan on taking good care of your XJ and work on it frequently, I'd say get greasable and grease them with every oil change. If you tend to neglect your XJ, get non greasable joints and then you won't have to worry about em

I agree about Spicer & Moog. I lean towards greaseable u-joints. Still need to know about drive-shaft compatibility....

That I'm not sure. I don't think there's too much a difference (if any). But we'll wait for someone else to chime in. Free bump

Should be fine. The main difference in d-shaft lengths is auto vs manual. IIRC, the 242 is an itty bit longer than the 231 but d-shaft should work fine

231 and 242 are almost identical in length, same driveshafts.

What can matter is the input gears (which are interchangeable between the two). See here: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...nput_gears.htm
