I’m sorry that I have not got back to you sooner but when you’re retired it’s easy to lose track of time.
To answer your question on the removal of the boot; I’m no expert at it but I remember look at a video about it and they stated that it was easier to remove and replace the boot from the door jamb side but to never cut it.

I know on mine there was no way to expose the wires (where break was) without doing a small cut on mine. It was like the rubber and wires was vulcanized together. I did buy a spare harness with the rubber boot just in case but I fixed mine and sealed it up where I cut it and ran new wire thru. I got the spare one from someone on this forum if you need it I can see if I still have it.
