Door seal
Old on top, new in bottom
96 on left, 97 on right
Hey everyone,
i have a late model 96 xj classic. Finally got tired of whistling door seals and went to replace.
i initially purchased seals for a 96. The first photo is my current seal on top of the new 96 seal. Install went fairly smooth but when I went to close the door, it was jammed up, and could get slide to actually closing it. I fiddled with it to no avail.
i returned them, as this late model 96 has various unreported 97 parts on it, and purchased the seals for a 97. See second image.
ive hear the 97 will fit a 96. Has anyone done this or can anyone shed any more light on it? I troubleshoot things for a living so I felt I did a thorough job with the first set of seals...

Update.
As expected, these also do not work. I am actually able to close he door partially, it latches, but just barely. So it’s practically still open and when I look up I can see outside the vehicle. Is there anything on these flipping xj’s thats ever a straight forward fix? Geez.

oh and I believe that it was either 96 or 97 that was a change-over year for the XJ, so that's probably why you're running into that one.

Take 1/4" polyester rope(Walmart) and place it in the molding around the door to give it more form and rigidity.

thats what i did with the 3 old seals i patched up with good parts from the seal that came out of the drivers side which is replaced with a new one. the 1/4 rope is quite nice tho some corners it does want to pop out overtime one dab of silicone holds it in place in those corners and the cabin noises are noticable less. the new seal makes it harder to close the door but i think that will form overtime and gets it shape.

edit: until i have another 75$ to spend on 3 more seals this really helped out, the patches are quite nice and hardly noticable, its too bad the rear hatch is almost the same but just different angle and dont match up with the door seals i would of been able to fix that too but now its for later that rear hatch seal is another 35$
