I realize it has to be crushed down, but I've gone from a ripped seal, to a barely closed door. Any idea how to crush this thing down faster for a better fit?

The material of the new seal is thicker and less flimsy than the original. Can I cut the back of it out?

First make sure it is on right with no binding so it does not get damaged. Let it sit in the sun and get warm. Try to close it and let it conform to its new home while still in the sun.

Yes, it's in firmly and tight with no gap at the joint. I even used a rubber mallet to make sure it all bottomed out. I figured it would be hard to close the door but not to a point where it sticks out.

Would lightly passing over it with a heat gun help?

I know this thread is over 2 years old but I have the same issue. About a year ago I bought new weatherstripping all the way around and installed it. I thought maybe eventually the rubber would get softer and I wouldn't have to slam the heck out of the door to shut it and the door would be where it was before and not jutting out at the top. Months go by... I start to deal with it... Few more months go by... I forget about it. its just normal to me. But then one day (today) I sit on the toilet and randomly remember about my doors... I stand up and say I don't have to take this crap anymore! I'm tired of people in Wal-Mart parking lot thinking me and my wife are pissed at each other just cause we have to slam the doors shut! I'm tired of my door panel popping off! I'm tired of waking the baby! I'm just tired of it! I wanna make door shutting great again!

Any suggestions besides buying different new weatherstripping (which is probably what I need to do but I don't wanna)

Was the profile of the new the same as the old or was it the infamous "universal" weatherstrip?

I'm curious on this one as well. I bought a brand new driver door seal earlier this year thinking mine needed to be replaced due to a small leak around window to a pillar. Well still leaked after the new seal but now that it's cooler I realized a draft with my arm on the door rest and can see a small gap of air. Seems it isn't closing all the way despite how hard I slam it.

It looked like it. The only noticeable difference was that it didn't have holes in it for the air to escape quicker when you shut the door. I bought it off Team Cherokee. Before I bought it I called them and they said it was the same as factory. Obviously it's not.

has anyone been able to resolve? I just returned my 96 seals as I couldn’t even close the door. It was about 4 inches away from closing. Just bought a set of 97’s hoping they would fit better on my 96, but the look like they will have issues as well

all 4 of my door seals were torn and 2 of them were leaking,

https://www.quadratec.com/products/55014_8110.htm

i ordered 1 of these and used good pieces of the seal i removed to patch up the other 3 it turned out very well, i have to say the new seal is a little thicker on the mounting area had a bit of hard time putting the trim back around it but it was doable and the door does have a harder time to close but i just think that is a matter of time. of course its stiffer tho the door stays mostly shut and think it will sit right soon.

edit: its been a little over a week now and when i look at the seal it does form to its shape overtime, but 4 inches as you said no i didnt see that much

Try running a strand of 1/4" polyester rope(WalMart) around the seal. The rigidity of the rope might help the seam.
