Sounds like you need to remove the door panels and spray all the linkages and work them loose again. Was you XJ used off road? It might be a case of crud inside the doors. Do the windows work? Are they power windows and locks? JB

If they are power locks, try to move the lock button by hand. (obviously),If that doesn't work, get a couple screwdrivers and remove the inner door panel. Use a flashlight to look inside there and spray the crap out of the lock mechanisms with PB blaster or something similar. The lock button and latch inside the door are all connected by rods and levers, try to move these by hand. Your problem sounds like rust and crud are locking up the locks lol. With a light in there you will be able to see how the button and latch are connected.

I had problems lock/unlock on D.S., then latch quit working. I took my door apart and replaced the door latch assembly. When I replaced the latch, the lock problem was taken care of also. I got my new Latch online from Kenosha County Classics for 55.00 plus shipping. Dealer price was 120.00. It was my first time taking a door apart, but it wasn't too bad. Be patient and enjoy the ride.

Before you buy that new latch, lubricate the working of the old one when you take it out and you may get it to work ok.

I had some issues with mine when I first got mine...I took the door pannel off of my back passenger door and it was frozen...I didnt want to mess with it so I pushed the rod out that goes to the button on the outside...it wont open from the outside but it will from the inside now...mine was just 1 door so this wasn't a big deal...and on the inside it was messed up on the passenger front...the rods were bent or something so I disconnected it from the lock button on the inside and I have to lock that one at night with the key and not my keyless entry.

just a thought
