Default Door locks electrical issue

So it’s a 98 xj…….when I go to lock my doors from the driver door, I get nothin sometimes, so I have to reach across to the passenger side and flip that button a couple times, and it will make the driver side electronics work again…..

this happens about 50 percent of the time each day.

Also, I had the window regulator replaced in driver door, but after a couple weeks, it just won’t do anything again, I’m scared to roll it down again in fear of not getting it back up.

anyways, I already replaced the button panel on driver door, didn’t change anything.

I also have to bang on the top of the dash to get the gauges to come back on throughout the day.

Electric windows are a curse, that's my opinion. Anyway a common problem is bad connections and broken wires. Wires may break where flexed when door is opened or closed. A good ground point is needed, and each connector should be checked for continuity, i.e. voltage drop across while window is activated. High voltage drops mean that wire is frayed, or connector is bad.
there are some write ups you may search for on power windows on this website
note...... There are at least two versions of the electric windows, my 1990 type is different from the 2001 type. Beware of that when looking at schematics.
So search for power window posts, note the year model discussed, or simply do voltage drop tests thru the system to figure what is bad.
also make sure the mechanisms are not jammed, stiff, rusted together, etc....

good luck.

as for as this particular vehicle, how many hours would you guess a good mechanic shop would take to figure it out?

I know troubleshooting electrical sucks sometimes, but based on what you have seen on these jeeps, any ideas time wise?

The door locks circuit can be funky. I chased ghosts in my system for 2 days straight. Fixed several broken/questionable wires and found some corroded connections that I repaired. Made the locks work for about 2 weeks until they acted up again.

The final solution that cured my problems for good was to reflow the solder on the circuit boards inside the door switches. Crazy, I know, right? If you search you'll find many reports of people doing the same and having it be successful. I guess over time the solder gets brittle, cracks, and has an intermittent poor connection. They've worked well for years since.

You say you've replaced the driver's side, but the passenger side is actually the "brain" of the system. Any action from all switches goes through the passenger side switch.

About your window regulator issue, that could be related to the power window lock switch on the driver's side panel. I know those tend to be problematic.

A shop will throw parts at it till the end of days and rack up a big bill. Someone who is familiar with XJ's and this issue could likely track it down rather quickly. If you're electrically inclined at all, I'd recommend getting a factory service manual (because it has proper wiring diagrams) and doing it yourself.

I’m chasing down a problem with the power locks. All the windows work fine. The driver’s side switch doesn’t do anything. The passenger side switch only unlocks. I can hear the passenger rear door whirring.. From what I’ve read, it’s probably stripped and needs to be replaced. I have my driver’s switch apart and was about to re solder the connections. I see a lot of what appears to be corrosion on it. It’s a hard whitish/ yellow residue around the solder points. Is this thing toast, or scrape the residue off, then re solder? Rather not waste my time if someone has seen this and the re soldering didn’t work.

Its just dried soldering flux. get a toothbrush and some 90% Iso alcohol and clean it off.

I'm getting ready to redo my factory switch as soon as I find where I put it. The "new" amazon Switch doctor one has broken internally leaving my passenger window inoperable. I'm going to desolder as much as I need and replace it with new fresh solder.

An xj thing is locks and windows not working. You can fix it for a while with a new control panel in the drivers door but it doesn't last forever. Something with xj's has cursed the windows and locks.
