AT does not switch while in parttime low NP242
Hi,
I'm from Germany and have not found an answer to my Problem.
Having a Cherokee Xj 4.0 1997, with an NP242.
When I go offroading, and shift into partime low, the Automatic transmission does not shift into the next higher gear. It just stucks and engine goes up to 4000 RPM.
After about 30 minutes, for whatever reason, it start again shifting the automatic transmission into the next gears.
I'm having this problem since a few weeks. In the meantime, replaced the AT oil and filter, also flushed the system. No change.
What might cause the problem, that AT will not shift, while in parttime low ?
When using fulltime, AT shifts also normal.
All help is appreciated.
Regards
Burkhard

It's a guess, but I would test the throttle position sensor. I'm thinking that you're not giving it much throttle while in parttime low, and perhaps that range of the sensor is bad. Also check that the cable between the throttle body to the transmission is properly adjusted.

I tried to look into this and I couldn't find a good answer. Most of the problems I found are with not being able to shift into or out of 4 Low. I only saw 1 thread on another website that talked about it, but no one gave a fix for it, or what could be causing it.

Transmission fluid expands when it gets hot, so maybe it takes 30 minutes for it to get hot enough and expand, essentially taking up more volume in the trans, then things start to work correctly. Have you checked the fluid level a few times since your flush? Checking it while it is hot, and on level ground, with the trans in park or neutral.
