Ok let's troubleshoot this thing like this, when the key is held to the cranking position and its running ,dose it run steady or is the starter keeping it running, will it just not catch and keep running,or dose it run like normal except for the starter being on.let's ask ourselves what is deferent about the run position and the cranking position ?

the same thing happened to my friends xj, same year and all. if he held the key like he was trying to start it it would stay on. what he did was wire the fuel pump directly to the battery and install a killswitch in the dash to turn it on or off. worked fine after that. I dont know the correct wire or relay that needs to be replaced to fix this but that worked at least for the time being.
