Test the CPS with a DMM-Renix engine will read 200 ohms +/-75. HO will read infinite if good.
The map sensor is below, follow the vac lines from it, if all are good, test it(testing procedure)- http://www.cherokeetalk.com/forum/f6...rocedure-1261/

Is the ballist rezistor (spelling) dog bone, part of the starting system on the older jeeps like it is on the 80s era dodge pickups or is it just for the fuel pump on a jeep, because on my plow truck I would start it with the key and as soon as I let the key go it would shut back off,I changed the dog bone or ballist rez. And it stayed running.I dont know if this would help or not, but I would like to know about this could someone that knows for sure let me know thanks.

The MAP sensor is NOT needed to get these things running.
The ASD Relay is working or it would NEVER fire
check fuel pressure.
check fuel pressure.
check fuel pressure.
check fuel pressure.
then
check fuel pressure.
next check CPS
check CPS
check CPS
check CPS

Since he stated he could pull out the key and it would still run...Couldnt this be an ignition switch or cylinder problem? I'm curious because a buddy of mine has the same symptoms.

When you first turn the key on do you here the fuel pump running ? The start circuit on these xjs have a bypass that when the key is in the starting or cranking position the fuel pump relay is bypassed. Starting the fuel pump works, return the key to the run position and no fuel pump voltage! Exchange it with a known good one ,and happy trails .

MAP sensor compares ambient barometric pressure during start-up to engine load while engine is running. There you have it, it can still start with a bad map.
