does anyone run the factory trac-loc

i got some extra cash and am dying to buy a locker-lsd but wanna save some $$$$$ (who doesn't) i can buy new factory style clutch posi for less than anything else but is that because it is inferior? btw i have the 29spline 8.25

I have the same thing and i was also thinking the same thing as you. The factory trak-loc rear end is ok if its mostly on road driving but off road its not the best, itll get you through but with alot more effort then there should be, its barely better then an open carrier, what im doing is saving up for the powertrax no-slip locker, its x10 better in my opnion. Heres a vid for you showing the differences.

Unless u have the know-how, ability, and equipment, u will have to spend extra $ for the "set up" of any traction enhanced diff except for a automatic lunchbox locker (they are DIY, no set up). Remember that the "S" in LSD stands for "slip". I've installed 4 PowerTrax No-Slip lockers in various vehicles including our XJ. DIY in 2-3 hours.

Agreed. Just go with the powertrax, its honestly the best deal for the amount your spending on it.

diffs are easy i set them up regularly and understand the cost and labor of the install kits i was kind of hoping they were like gm's gov-loc or gm uses auburn for their lsd's and are nice units.... well lookin like a lunchbox for the budget build then again there is always the millermatic

I get my factory auburn LSD's from Dakota's in the local pick and pull. Most 90's era Dakota's (2 and 4wds) had 8.25 rears and many had LSD (4 and 5 Spring). The problem is there all 27 spline and they work great on road and light wheeling but when you start putting alot of weight on them they slip.

If the OE Jeep stuff is anything like the Ford LSD in my 8.8...................it absolutely sucks. The only reason I ran the LSD was because it was in the 8.8 I took out of the Explorer to put in the Jeep.

Thanks for this info! Won't help my 00XJ, but great info for helping set up buddy's budget builds!

The 8.8 LSD's work much better if you change the clutch pack set-up. From the factory they're usually set up as "steel-clutch-clutch-steel-steel...". If you get an extra set of clutches you can make them "steel-clutch-steel-clutch..." and get one extra clutch on each side. I do that to all the Mustang diffs and it works well.

Never liked the gov-locks, every one I ever saw exploded all those tiny gears and parts. Not a fan of Auburns either at least those with the cone type clutchs. Once they're worn, the diff is trash. For a clutch style limited slip, I prefer the Eaton brand and you can usually get those in a couple of levels of "breakaway torque" . They use coil springs to load the clutches instead of bellevue washers. By changing to a stiffer spring you will alter the slip bias.

I have a limited slip in my 8.8 rear and an e-locker in the front. So far, that's been a good enough combination to get me thru the winter. However, I'm headed to Moab this weekend and I'm starting to wish I'd gone ahead and installed a locker in the back.........
