Default Do I need to upgrade my alternator

I have a stock alternator, I tried to get the numbers off it and managed to get one "5685" not sure if this will help or if they are all the same for the 93 Cherokee Country, 4.0L
I'm wondering how high I can go with my off road lights, I'm currently running 400w and would like to add 100w more?

With the current setup I haven't had any issues, no flickering or dimming,
The question is should I go ahead?

And if I'm still withing tolerances what would be the recommended max on a stock charging system without hurting anything?

I'm not sure if it matters but beyond the lights I don't have any big power consumers, still running factory stereo etc...

Thanks in advance!
Mark

If stuff dims with everything on then i say yes. You can take the alt off a 2.5 L dakota and it bolts in and upgrades to 117 amps

Thanks for the info, so far so good I'll keep my eye out for a spare Dakota 2.5L alternator just in case.

I was just concerned about burning something up, but by the sounds of it worst case would be lights getting dim or battery running low at which point I could just turn the big lights off.

Take care.

When browsing the parts catalogs I've seen alternators available anywhere from 70 to 106 amps, most of them seem to be in the 90 amp range. At 14.4 volts output that’s roughly 1300 watts at max output. After efficiency and charging losses, plus the usual electrical loads of ignition, fuel injection, A/C, window defroster, etc., you may have half of that leftover. Maybe 600 watts. But don’t forget that’s at max output, which doesn’t apply at idle.

If you can find a 110+ amp alternator for under $150 I would say go for it.

I run 6 100w lights you should be ok for now but if your looking to add some power consuming accessories get an alt. Upgrade

those are not a direct bolt in, you have to grind a good bit. and absolutely positively without a doubt have to upgrade your wiring

Well I know for a fact the Jeep Grand Cherokee alternator with 136A is a direct bolt on no grinding required. Also it would probably be best to replace the wiring no matter what upgraded alternator you went with. The only difference with the other ones listed is the plastic piece on the back of the Alternator, you have to switch them over, just take the nut off and switch them, its not difficult.

You can have the stock unit rebuilt from more power output. IIRC they can rewind a 90amp to near 130-140 amp output.

I just picked one up for my 94 country from a 98 durango. Im going to have to grind the outer bracket to make it fit. Not to mention how big of a PITA it was to get it in there due to the added size of the 136 amp vs the stock 90 amp

yeah its def a pain aint it? make sure that you upgrade the wiring from alt to pdc atleast, if you dont you will blow the fuse under the hood and will keep blowing it
