from experience with other vehicles.. the tranny should just slide straight out.. Is your auto or manual? Is the starter still in? Is the motor and tranny still in or out the vehicle? You might have to wiggle it a bit to break it loose from that point us a BF flat head or prybar and slow separate the housing from block. Be very careful not to dig in to any of the metal.. Would need pics or more info to really understand what and how your doing this removal.. Also if you search around im sure you kind find a how to or problems occurring during removal..

well from what i read on a how to for jeep aw4 once everything is disco the tranny should seperate from the block. now are you doing this alone or with help.. The engine has to be level in order to properly remove it.. its not a easy pull to do have to give some good pressure to break it free..

If everything is off and level and your still having problems im not sure what could be binding it.. Maybe someone else here will stop by and add more info to ur situation..

The tranny shield is at the bottom of the bell housing/ inspection plate.. that connects to the block and tranny..

As for the flywheel i wasnt aware that its attached to the tranny itself.. If it is i was thinking of manual where everything bolt up to the crank.. Yea that could be possible the torque converter on auto are assembled with the tranny

Ive worked with standard trannys rather than auto so not sure how to help u there.. Also what was holding in or did it just take a lil elbow grease to get it off?? Good job. If you dont mind me asking, are u replacing/ upgrading the engine or tranny?

Unbolt the torque convertor from flywheel, iirc there are 5 or 6 bolts.
