Red face Is it the dimmer switch?

My interior dash and tranny shifter lights don't dimm anymore. I used to be able to control how bright they could be by twisting my headlight switch. But now they don't dimm, they just turn on and stay on when the switch is turned all the way clockwise (before the dome lights turn on). When I twist the switch counter clockwise to dim the lights they just turn off. I'm thinking this is my headlight switch going out, am I right?

yup, the rheostat in the switch has failed.

I took one apart and cleaned it once, but it was on an old Impala and I couldn't tell you if you can do that with Jeeps or not.

Thanks for the help guys, I've got an 88 4.0 5speed parts jeep that's only got 150k on it vs my 88 4.0 aw4 with 194k. Can I use the switch from this jeep or am I better off buying a new one? Could someone explain or send a link to a writeup that explain how to remove and install the switch whiteout hacking the hell outta my dash.

If they're the same year, the switches will be the same.
I never had an 88 so I couldn't tell you for sure how to pull the switch out.
Sometimes there's a pin hole on the front of the switch. You stick a paper clip in to release the **** but I don't know if that's how yours works.
