Default Differential change and axle questions/problems

I changed my front gears yesterday and all went well. Test drove it and all. I wake up this morning and there is a puddle of Diff fluid by my left front tire.... So I am assuming that it ran/leaked out around the axle housing/ shaft.

What could be the cause of this and what is the fix????

Thanks

Did you over fill the diff. After driving, your diff moved fluid into the axle tubes & I don't believe there is an axle seals on the d30's. it'll leak out until everything is equalized. I wouldn't worry too much. You have to change your diff fluid a couple more times until your gears are all broken in. Assume your gears (ring & Pinion) are new.

You could install tune seal if you wanted. $60 or $80 for a set through Quadratec, probably cheaper through serious offroad or other vendor here on CF.

Thanks for the info....I filled the diff until it was running back out of the fill hole. Which I thought was how to gauge when it was full.... Just was not sure if a seal went bad during the exchange or what was going on.

And I used gears out of one of my spare D 30's so they are already broke in.

Uuum, not too sure about that… D30’s have axle seals, I hadreplace mine twice. You have to be very careful when you re-install your axleshafts as they can wreck the seal and cause the leaking the OP described. Also,I didn’t think it was very easy to overfill the diff, unless the jeep wasjacked way up in the front, it should just drain out the front until level (assuming jeep is level). I think D30 diff sealsare under $20/each (Canadian), pain inthe d!ck to get in and out, need to remove carrier…. Sorry.

Yeah I agree. Anytime I work on a front diff I automatically remove the axle seals, clean the tubes out. That way there will be no dirt that could get pushed back in to the seals when sliding the axles in. Yes a PITA to have to go back and pull the carrier out again just to change those seals after you were just there. Yes you could always add the outer tube seals like these.

My only concern is that if the original seals are left in the fluid could over time end up trapped in the axle tube between the inner and outer seals and cause the diff to run low on fluid.

My bad, I wasn't aware there was axle seals at the carrier, just know there isn't an outter. I tore mine down & didn't notice there was an inner axle seal at the carrier.

Thanks for all the info.... So I guess I will just take it all back apart and replace all the seals just to be on the safe side.

Make sure you clean out the axle tubes before installing new seals.
