Default different np231 ???

I brought my jeep in to have the TC swaped out because the original was having issues. The mechanic who did the work told me the one I brought him would not fit because the shaft is 3/4 of an inch too long and cannot go in all the way into the tranny. Can someone please tell me if their were different np231 ? I always thought they were all the same. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

( I got the new TC from ebay so I dont know what it came off of. )

Look on the back of the xfer case, there should be a round tag, if it came out of a jeep it will say, NP 231 J, I installed a xfer case from a dodge, the tag on it said, NP 231D, the xfer case input shaft was about a 1/2 inch longer, but it did bolt up, the only difference is the out put shaft, its a bigger spline count, I just got the slip yoke out of the jy from a dodge trk.

Did the mech, try to bolt it up, or did he just compare the two

The one I bought from ebay has the tag removed. The mechanic tried to bolt it up but said he could'nt. where else can I look to try an identify this TC?? I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by taking the slip yoke from the jy. I think he means where it bolts up to the tranny. The piece that sticks out. Sorry if I'm not making sens.

there is also a NP 231C for the chevy version with the 6 pinion capable planatary gear. so yes there are many different kinds, just look on the circle tag on the back. also if your input shaft is good, you can swap it to the new t-case, while you are in there swap to a SYE, idk y u had a shop do it, it is ridiculously easy.

It has the SYE with 6 planetary gears and 1.25" wide chain in it. I asked them if they could just swap the shaft but told me it ran all the way through and therfore could not. How easy is it to swap out the shaft, I have no garage and mine is a dd so has to be done in one shot.

You need to find another mechanic, you can swap your o old shaft with the new one

I am willing to bet based on your mechanics notion that he said he cant change the shaft because it goes all the way through, that he never even tried to mount the xfer case.
